Laboratory testing, including urine analysis, blood work and saliva testing, are an essential aspect of a complete medical assessment. Dr.Fennell, Naturopathic Doctor uses standard laboratory testing to provide further information for a complete assessment. Blood work such as a CBC (complete blood count), and thyroid testing provide invaluable insight into your health. Please provide any current lab tests that you may have on your first visit. All medical reports such as MRIs, X-rays, pathology reports or scans are valuable assets that Dr.Fennell, Naturopathic Doctor will use during her assessment of your health concerns.

InsideOut Health Solutions also performs independent laboratory testing such as hormone saliva testing, zinc status testing and digestive analyses. This information is important as it allows us to know what is occurring in your body from the InsideOut. Please see Lab tests offered for more detailed information.

InsideOut Health Solutions provides the following laboratory testing: (this list is not comprehensive, if you are seeking a specific test please call the clinic).

Great Smokies Lab Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis (CDSA): Evaluates digestion and absorption, bacterial balance and metabolism, yeast and immune status. For patients with irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, malabsorption, and other GI-related problems.

Great Smokies Lab Overgrowth of Bacteria in Small Intestine Breath Test: A simple, non-invasive test that detects overgrowth of bacteria in small intestine, a common condition that often underlies chronic symptoms of maldigestion and malabsorption, including bloating, gas, diarrhea, irregularity and abdominal pain

Great Smokies Lab Intestinal Permeability Assessment: Great Smokies Lab IP assessment analyzes urine for the clearance of two non-metabolized sugars, lactulose and mannitol to identify leaky gut syndrome and malabsorption. The assessment directly measures the ability of the two nonmetabolized sugar molecules to permeate the intestinal mucosa. Mannitol is easily absorbed and serves as a marker of transcellular uptake, while lactulose is only slightly absorbed and serves as a marker for mucosal integrity. To perform the test, one mixes premeasured amounts of lactulose and mannitol and drinks the challenge substance. The test measures the amount of lactulose and mannitol recovered in a urine sample over the next 6 hours.

Great Smokies Lactose Intolerance Breath Test: A simple, non-invasive test, detects lactose intolerance, a condition affecting more than 50 million Americans. Proper detection enables effective treatment of lactose maldigestion and malabsorption to help alleviate chronic symptoms of abdominal bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Lactose intolerance is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders, affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide. This condition arises from an enzyme (lactase) deficiency in the gut. Without adequate amounts of lactase, the digestive system is unable to properly break down and absorb lactose, the main sugar in milk and dairy products. When this happens, lactose is fermented by bacteria in the colon, causing the release of hydrogen and methane gases.

Symptoms of lactose intolerance may include bloating, diarrhea, flatulence, and abdominal cramps. By disrupting intestinal absorption, lactose intolerance may also trigger a shortage of critical nutrients. Eventually the digestive system may become weakened and made more susceptible to parasite infection, as well as yeast and bacterial overgrowth.

Great Smokies Digestive Function Analysis
Analyzes stool for digestive ability, absorption, pH, and bacterial metabolism, as reflected by short chain fatty acids.
Stool exam for triglycerides, Chymotrypsin, cholesterol, long chain fatty acids, total short chain fatty acids, phospholipids, pH and macroscopic analysis.

Possible Add-ons:
  • Bile Acids
  • Eosinophil Protein
  • Helicobacter pylori Stool Antigen EIA
  • Pancreatic Elastase

Great Smokies Microbiology Analysis
Evaluates stool for levels of beneficial flora, imbalanced flora, yeast, and pathogenic bacteria.
Fecal bacterial and yeast cultures, sensitivities as appropriate.

Possible Add-ons:

  • Campylobacter & Shiga-like Toxin by EIA
  • MIC Sensitivities,
  • Yeast or Bacteria

Individual Components

  • Bacteriology, anaerobic
  • Bacteriology, aerobic
  • Yeast Culture

Comprehensive Menopause Profile
Following menopause, a marked decrease in levels of estrogen and other sex hormones produces several distinct changes in female physiology. These changes can have a dramatic impact on a woman's physical and emotional health. Many conditions associated with this period of a woman's life, however, can be effectively overcome or modulated by re-establishing optimal hormonal balance.

The Menopause Profile identifies deficiencies (or excesses) of important sex hormones estradiol, estrone, estriol, progesterone, and testosterone. It can provide guidance in the therapeutic intervention of several conditions associated with sex hormone imbalances in women:

  • Endometriosis
  • Breast Cancer
  • Hypertension and Heart Disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Low libido

Detoxification Profile: The innovative Detoxification Profile from Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory assesses the body's capacity to carry out detoxification through functional challenges-caffeine, acetaminophen, and salicylate-which evaluate specific aspects of the detoxification process and free radical damage. These functional assessments provide a comprehensive profile of the body's detoxification capacity and potential susceptibility to oxidative damage.
This test measures the clearance of challenge substances in two salivary specimens; the products of detoxifying reactions are also assessed in an overnight urine specimen. In the Comprehensive version of this profile, the urine specimen is analyzed for levels of lipid peroxides. In addition, various oxidative markers are assessed from fasting blood specimens taken the morning after the challenge. These tests are sensitive indicators of biological detoxification status.
